On this project, I was in charge of designing the levels.

 

Tiling The Levels

Since we were working with 2D sprites on this project, the levels were made by using a color-coded tiling system.
How it works is that each color represents a sprite; The levels themselves were colored white, the rest was black. The locations of the breakable rocks were colored grey. The spawning points for Sten, Mats and the exit were colored turquoise, orange and green, respectively.

I first mapped the general layout of the levels. Then, when the maps were loaded into the game, the sprites spawned into their assigned positions.

Summary

FetMats Part VIII: The Revengance is a survival horror game where the Player crushes rocks with their pickaxe to escape from a zombie.

The Player takes control of the hapless miner Sten, who finds himself lost in the abandoned copper mines in Falun. As he tries to escape, he's chased by the reanimated corpse of FetMats, a miner who disappeared in the mines many years ago.

With the help of his trusty pickaxe, Sten must find the exit and his freedom before Mats robs him of it.

To win, the Player has to make their way through a maze, find the exit on each stage and avoid getting caught by the zombie chasing them. The Player's path is blocked by rocks which they have to crush with their pickaxe.

If the Player is caught by FetMats, they have to start the current stage over again.
